Wawa Recalls Four Bottled Drinks Over Potential Milk Allergen Contamination

American beverage company Wawa has issued a recall of four of its bottled beverages sold at nearly 200 stores across five states after a temporary equipment malfunction raised concerns about possible milk allergen contamination, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced yesterday.

The recall covers bottles of Wawa Iced Tea Lemon, Wawa Iced Tea Diet Lemon, Wawa Diet Lemonade and Wawa Fruit Punch, produced by the Wawa Beverage Company and sold at a limited number of stores in Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey and Virginia. The recall affects 196 total Wawa locations across those five states.

The recall was initiated after Wawa identified and corrected a temporary equipment issue that may have resulted in the presence of an undeclared milk allergen in the products. All recalled items have been removed from sale and disposed of by impacted stores. No Wawa stores in any other state are affected by the recall, and no other Wawa-branded beverages are included.

People who have allergies to milk run the risk of serious or life-threatening reactions if they consume the product. The FDA reports no illnesses have been linked to the contamination. Consumers who purchased any of the affected drinks are urged to discard them immediately.

The affected products carry the following code dates: Wawa Iced Tea Lemon with a best-by date of May 15, 2026, sold at 123 stores; Wawa Iced Diet Tea Lemon dated May 18, 2026, sold at 8 stores in New Jersey and Pennsylvania; Wawa Diet Lemonade dated May 18, 2026, sold at 12 stores in Delaware and New Jersey; and Wawa Fruit Punch dated May 19, 2026, sold at 53 stores across the five-state region.

The recall is an unusual stumble for a company that has built its reputation on food and beverage quality. Wawa Inc. began in 1803 as an iron foundry in New Jersey. Toward the end of the 19th century, the Wood family took an interest in dairy farming and opened a small processing plant in Wawa, Pennsylvania, in 1902. The first Wawa Food Market opened in Folsom, Delaware County, in 1964, marking the company’s evolution from a dairy operation to a convenience store chain.

Today, Wawa operates with an estimated $18.5 billion in 2023 sales and employs around 45,000 people. It ranks number one on the American Customer Satisfaction Index and was listed second among America’s best convenience store retailers by Newsweek in 2024. The company operates stores in Alabama, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, New Jersey, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Washington D.C., and West Virginia, and sells its own branded iced tea, orange juice and milk.

The irony of a milk allergen surfacing in beverages from a company with dairy roots is not lost on industry observers. Wawa built its early reputation on what it called “certified” milk, a high-cleanliness standard that set it apart from competitors. The company has long built a fiercely loyal customer base, with associates who are also part-owners through an employee stock ownership plan that accounts for roughly 40 percent of Wawa’s shares.
