Rather than chasing another television commercial, Diageo’s ready-to-drink brand is betting that participation, social media and cultural moments will deliver greater marketing returns.

Smirnoff Ice is taking its summer marketing beyond supermarket shelves with a Guinness World Records attempt that says as much about the future of beverage advertising as it does about hot dogs.

The Diageo-owned ready-to-drink (RTD) brand plans to attempt two Guinness World Records on August 1 in Put-in-Bay, Ohio, aiming to set records for the largest display of hot dogs and the largest hot dog party as part of its “Be A Part-y of History” campaign.

The activation promotes its seasonal Smirnoff Ice Red, White & Berry flavour while extending celebrations around America’s 250th anniversary. Participants must be at least 21 years old, with product sampling and live entertainment forming part of the event.

On the surface, the campaign looks like another quirky summer promotion. A closer look suggests something more strategic.

As competition intensifies across the RTD category, beverage companies are finding that memorable experiences often generate more consumer engagement than conventional advertising. Guinness World Records attempts have become an increasingly attractive marketing tool because they combine live events, social media content, local tourism partnerships and extensive earned media into a single activation.

For Smirnoff Ice, the world record itself is only part of the objective. The larger prize is creating an event consumers want to attend, film and share.

The choice of Put-in-Bay also appears deliberate. The Ohio island has long been recognised as one of the Midwest’s busiest summer entertainment destinations, attracting thousands of visitors during the peak holiday season. Instead of building an audience from scratch, Smirnoff Ice is positioning its campaign where its target consumers are already gathering.

The campaign also leans into Americana. The pairing of Red, White & Berry with hot dogs, one of America’s most recognisable summer foods, reinforces seasonal consumption occasions while giving the limited-edition flavour a stronger cultural identity than product advertising alone could achieve.

The effort is supported by social content featuring a trained eagle carrying a hot dog in one talon and a can of Smirnoff Ice Red, White & Berry in the other before unveiling the record attempt. The brand has also introduced a limited-edition hot dog-shaped crossbody Doggie Bag as part of an Instagram giveaway, extending the campaign into digital engagement.

The campaign reflects a broader shift in beverage marketing. Rather than telling consumers a product belongs at summer gatherings, brands are creating occasions where consumers become part of the story. User-generated videos, influencer coverage and local media attention frequently extend the campaign’s reach well beyond the event itself, often delivering exposure that traditional advertising struggles to match.

For the beverage industry, the campaign illustrates how marketing priorities continue to evolve. In an increasingly crowded RTD market, brands are investing less in simply promoting products and more in creating experiences that consumers actively participate in and distribute themselves.

The more important question may not be whether Smirnoff Ice breaks two Guinness World Records. It is whether campaigns like this become the new benchmark for how RTD brands compete for attention in an era where social reach can matter as much as shelf space.
