The International Council of Beverages Associations (ICBA) Africa has opened formal talks with the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN) on a strategic partnership to strengthen collaboration across the continent’s non-alcoholic beverage sector. The discussions, held in Lagos, brought together ICBA Africa Executive Director Iddah Asin and MAN Director General Dr Segun Ajayi-Kadir. Their focus: policy advocacy, industry development, and regional integration.

At the centre of the talks is a proposed Memorandum of Cooperation (MoC), which would give the two organisations a formal framework for collaboration. Memoranda are often treated as procedural milestones, but this one carries real weight. If finalised, it would create a platform for coordinated policy advocacy, shared industry intelligence, and closer alignment on issues affecting manufacturers across African markets. For an industry facing increasingly complex operating conditions, a unified voice could matter.

One Industry, Different Rulebooks

The timing is notable. The AfCFTA is gradually reshaping how manufacturers think about growth, pushing companies to look beyond domestic markets toward regional expansion. Yet many of the barriers to doing business remain stubbornly national.

A beverage company operating across several African markets can still face different labelling rules, taxation regimes, sustainability expectations, and regulatory processes from one country to the next. For manufacturers, that adds compliance costs and operational complexity. Partnerships between industry bodies can help close that gap by encouraging dialogue between policymakers and the private sector while pushing for more consistent regulation.

What the Collaboration Could Deliver

According to both organisations, the proposed collaboration would focus on coordinated policy advocacy, stronger support for manufacturers, and greater sharing of market intelligence and best practices. It would also deepen engagement between manufacturing associations as trade under AfCFTA continues to expand. Taken together, those priorities point to an industry seeking not just growth, but resilience.

Why Nigeria Matters

Nigeria sits at the centre of that conversation. As one of Africa’s largest beverage markets and manufacturing economies, developments there tend to resonate well beyond its borders, and manufacturers expanding across the continent watch Nigeria’s regulatory direction closely.

MAN represents manufacturers across multiple sectors and brings significant institutional weight and deep knowledge of Nigeria’s industrial landscape. ICBA Africa, meanwhile, serves as the regional voice of the global non-alcoholic beverage industry, engaging governments on issues from nutrition policy and sustainability to trade and responsible business practices. A closer working relationship between the two has the potential to strengthen industry representation both in Nigeria and across the continent.

A Broader Shift

Whether the proposed Memorandum of Cooperation ultimately reshapes policy will depend on what follows the Lagos discussions. But the meeting reflects something bigger: an industry recognising that its biggest challenges, regulation, sustainability, taxation, consumer health, and trade, are no longer purely national concerns.

The talks between ICBA Africa and MAN suggest Africa’s beverage industry is beginning to organise itself around that reality. The partnership itself is not the story. It is a signal of where the industry is heading next.
