Maltina Turns 50, Adapting to Nigerian Lifestyles

The five-decade-old malt brand is using its anniversary to reconnect with consumers as work, family routines and drinking occasions evolve.

Maltina is marking 50 years in Nigeria by reflecting on how changing consumer lifestyles have reshaped the occasions around which Nigerians eat, socialise and take breaks.

Introduced to the Nigerian market in 1976, the non-alcoholic malt drink has remained a familiar presence at family gatherings, celebrations and everyday social occasions. Its anniversary campaign now places those changing routines at the centre of the brand’s story.

The shift is less about abandoning the occasions that built Maltina and more about finding them in a different Nigeria. Many consumers now combine full-time employment with side businesses, education and family responsibilities. That leaves less time for extended social interaction and makes convenience a more important part of how beverages fit into daily life.

Maltina’s current strategy reflects that change. Nigerian Breweries has introduced the brand in 25cl and 50cl PET formats, presenting them as options suited to school bags and everyday routines.

The brand is also taking its anniversary campaign beyond conventional advertising. Its 2026 Nourishment Tour is targeting one million young Nigerians through school-based activities focused on nutrition, science and learning. By May, the programme had reportedly reached more than 227,000 students through school tours and pop-up activations.

That puts younger consumers at the centre of Maltina’s next chapter. It also gives the anniversary a commercial purpose. A legacy beverage brand can carry enormous recognition, but recognition alone does not guarantee relevance. Younger consumers enter the market with different routines, different spending pressures and a wider range of beverage choices.

Maltina has consequently been extending its presence across different consumption moments. Its anniversary programme has included school activations, Ramadan community engagements and consumer events across several Nigerian cities.

The timing matters. Drinkabl’s recent analysis found that Nigerian beverage consumers are becoming more selective about how they spend, while brands face pressure to remain relevant as consumption patterns change.

For Maltina, 50 years provides something many newer brands cannot buy: memory. The challenge now is converting that memory into continued relevance.

Its anniversary campaign suggests the brand is betting on the same basic idea that helped it endure: beverages remain tied to everyday life, but everyday life keeps changing.
