7UP Rebrands With a Lime-Led Reboot

Keurig Dr Pepper is reformulating 7UP around a lime-forward taste, the brand’s biggest change in more than 15 years, with the new recipe and a redesigned look rolling out nationwide in mid-August.

The lime-led formula applies to 7UP Regular, 7UP Zero Sugar, Cherry 7UP and Cherry 7UP Zero Sugar. Each will carry a new “Lime Lemon” designation, a vertical logo and bolder colors, backed by a marketing push the company calls “Flip the Sip” that runs across television, social media and in-store displays.

The move targets a lemon-lime category Keurig Dr Pepper values near five billion dollars, one where Sprite has held the No. 3 soda spot for years and PepsiCo’s Starry has struggled since its 2023 rename from Sierra Mist. KDP’s State of Beverages 2026 Trend Report found 72% of Gen Z and Alpha consumers gravitate toward citrus-forward flavors, the demographic the reformulation is built to win.

Blind testing found consumers preferred the lime-forward version over the current formula on taste and refreshment, according to Keurig Dr Pepper. Chief marketing and innovation officer Drew Panayiotou said the change means the brand is “rewriting the rules of the lemon lime category.”

The repositioning fits a pattern among heritage soda brands leaning on identity rather than ingredients to hold shelf space. Drinkabl.media’s coverage of Diet Coke’s fashion-adjacent campaign tied to The Devil Wears Prada 2 traced a similar bet on culture over category. Coca-Cola, meanwhile, has moved to lock down its own brand equity elsewhere, recently renewing the contour bottle trademark that protects its bottle shape through 2035.

Existing 7UP inventory will sell through before the new formula reaches shelves, meaning the two versions will sit side by side at retail for several weeks. Whether the reformulation moves volume against Sprite and Starry, rather than just refreshing the label, will show up in the next set of category share numbers.
