Guinness Nigeria has recognised its security personnel on International Security Officers’ Day, putting an often unseen part of beverage manufacturing into focus as the brewer expands under new ownership and confronts operational risks across its Nigerian footprint.

The company marked the July 24 observance by thanking its security team for protecting its people, workplaces and assets, describing the function as essential to its operations and its wider “Build for More” ambitions.

The recognition comes against a more consequential backdrop than the corporate message suggests. In its latest annual report, Guinness Nigeria’s audit committee identified the security situation around the company’s operational sites as an emerging risk, alongside inflation, fraud, and other pressures that could affect the business.

For a brewer operating at Guinness Nigeria’s scale, that exposure extends beyond conventional premises security. The company operates production and logistics infrastructure across Nigeria, including its Ogba brewery in Lagos, Benin brewery in Edo State and its Aba brewery and logistics facility in Abia State. Protecting that network means securing employees, production assets, warehouses and inventory while supporting the continuity of a distribution system moving alcoholic beverages through a complex national market.

Corporate security responsibilities previously advertised by Guinness Nigeria have also extended into threat monitoring, intelligence gathering, crisis management, liaison with law enforcement, business continuity and brand protection. That last function carries particular weight in Nigeria, where legitimate beverage manufacturers continue to operate alongside an illicit alcohol market that regulators and industry groups say creates risks for consumers, tax collection and established brands.

The operating environment has also changed substantially inside Guinness Nigeria itself. Tolaram acquired Diageo’s 58.02% controlling stake in the brewer in 2024, ending Diageo’s controlling ownership while leaving the Guinness brand under Diageo. Guinness Nigeria continues to manufacture and distribute Guinness and other locally produced brands under long-term licensing and royalty arrangements.

A financial recovery has since followed the ownership transition. For the 18 months ended December 2025, Guinness Nigeria reported revenue of ₦730.8 billion and operating profit of ₦89.3 billion, while profit after tax reached ₦41.2 billion, reversing the ₦54.8 billion loss recorded in the previous reporting period. The comparison requires caution because the latest figures cover 18 months rather than the previous 12-month period following a change in the company’s financial year-end. Still, the return to profitability gives Guinness Nigeria greater room to pursue the portfolio expansion and operating improvements contained in its Build for More strategy.

And that makes security increasingly a commercial issue. More production, inventory and distribution activity inevitably creates more points at which disruption can affect supply, employees or assets. For beverage companies, the strength of the systems behind the brewery gates can therefore matter almost as much as what happens on the production line.

Guinness Nigeria framed Friday’s recognition around its TORCH values of Trust, Commitment, Respect, Courage and Humility. But behind the appreciation is a less visible operational reality: security has become part of the infrastructure supporting the brewer’s next phase of growth.

As Guinness Nigeria moves from financial recovery towards expansion under Tolaram, the next test is whether the security and resilience systems operating quietly behind its breweries, warehouses and distribution network can scale as quickly as the business they are expected to protect.
