Nestlé Nigeria, Guinness Nigeria, Flour Mills of Nigeria (FMN) and MTN Nigeria have joined other corporate and institutional stakeholders in backing the Africa Sustainability Pledge, a commitment to promote responsible resource use, waste reduction and inclusive economic growth. The declaration was adopted at the inaugural Africa Sustainability Forum 2026, held on 20 October at the Oriental Hotel in Lagos.

Convened by TheNumbersNG.com under the theme Sustainable Futures: Driving Just Transitions, Green Growth and Shared Prosperity, the forum brought together businesses, regulators and sustainability professionals. Other participating organisations included Rite Foods, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), the Food and Beverage Recycling Alliance (FBRA), PwC Nigeria and Aren Paper Mills.

What companies have committed to

The Africa Sustainability Pledge calls on participating organisations to reduce waste, use resources efficiently, support environmentally friendly innovations that create jobs and ensure economic growth benefits disadvantaged communities. It also places responsibility on businesses to incorporate environmental considerations into production, investment decisions and their wider value chains.

Nestlé Nigeria’s Sustainability Manager, Chinwe Obi, emphasised the importance of collective action and partnerships in addressing environmental and social challenges. Elvis Eromosele, Managing Editor of TheNumbersNG.com and lead coordinator of the forum, argued that businesses, government institutions, investors and communities would need to coordinate their efforts to deliver meaningful progress.

The beverage industry’s recycling challenge

For beverage manufacturers, the declaration arrives as Nigeria tightens expectations around packaging recovery and recycled materials. The Plastic Waste Control Regulations 2026 require plastic producers to incorporate at least 25 per cent recycled PET into covered packaging by January 2028, with the requirement rising to 50 per cent subsequently. This creates a direct commercial incentive for manufacturers to develop reliable collection and recycling infrastructure.

Some participating companies already have programmes addressing these pressures. Nestlé Nigeria has formalised a plastics recovery coalition involving environmental regulators, recycling organisations and other stakeholders across 12 locations nationwide. The company has also reported using 50 per cent recycled PET in its Nestlé Pure Life bottles, giving it an existing operational programme against which future commitments can be assessed.

From declarations to measurable results

The challenge for the participating companies will be translating the pledge into measurable operational outcomes. The forum’s declaration provides a shared direction, but publicly available details do not establish individual company targets, investment commitments, implementation deadlines or a monitoring mechanism for measuring progress. No financial commitments were disclosed.

For Nigeria’s beverage industry, the distinction matters. Manufacturers face rising expectations around packaging recovery, energy efficiency and waste management, while recycling organisations must expand collection capacity to supply materials for industrial reuse. Whether the Africa Sustainability Pledge produces stronger cooperation between manufacturers, recyclers and regulators will depend on what participating companies implement after the Lagos meeting.
